Fuguestate
Summary Document & InvitationSo, who's it for and what's it about?
A musical fugue features a myriad of melodies played over and around one another, while a psychological fugue describes a state of dissociation and confusion often accompanied by a spontaneous excursion from one’s usual environment. Both ‘fuguestates’ intersect in an experimental, live art collaboration between artist Jason Maling and composer Joseph Giovinazzo, who combine elements of sound art and video installation in a participatory performance. A summary document to attract funding for the event established a brooding, mysterious tone, with its largely black and white palette inspired by the piano and its central role in the event. The invitation is crowded with layers of text and image that merge, tangle and dissolve like a fugue itself, and suggest sensations of confusion and loss.
